Intro b - How the Blueprint works

Course Summary

How the Song Evaluation Blueprint (SEB) works:

Our approach has TWO PHASES:

  • The Listening Phase (where we take inventory of what works and needs work)
  • The Action Phase (where we work through the issues we discovered and fix things)

The Listening Phase is divided into five sections:

A: Define The Positive Aspects,

B: Possible Writing Issues,

C: Possible Performance Issues,

D: Production Issues, and

E: Possible Mix Issues.

For each section, there are notes on what to focus on, components or aspects to identify, checkpoints to review, and tips on action taking and refining. Time, patience, and perseverance is needed to craft a great song, but don't let perfection kill it - get it to 80% done right and keep moving, and refine it later.

IMPORTANT: -> This approach of listening is of course just one way to identify the areas that need work. The more progressed we are the more we might hear and note things from different areas in one or two listens or we might work on the production or mix and just take notes for that area. However, I think first it's good to really understand what music is made of and give each area due focus.

FOCUSED LISTENING AND TAKING NOTES AWAY FROM YOUR COMPUTER WILL SAVE YOU TIME AND HELP YOU NOT GETTING LOST IN DETAIL.

Part 2 - The Action Phase with our notes we work from the outside in. Bigger issues to smaller issues. This is not always in perfect order and we might skip a section to come back to it. For example we can't finish all the writing and work on the production for the backing track first. We also might start over taking new notes after finishing some of the issues. But since it's easy to get lost the blueprint can help you stay organized and work through all the issues your song might have.
